Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 118:29
With the “safe at home” order that most of us find ourselves a part of, the Hallmark folks have brought many Christmas movies on for viewing with the hopes of causing some of the fear and panic to subside as we think of the Hope of Christmas. So, it got me thinking about an older Christmas movie.
When I'm worried and I can't sleep I count my blessings instead of sheep... Irving Berlin from the 1954 movie White Christmas
The song "Count Your Blessings," written by Irving Berlin and performed so wonderfully by Bing Crosby, offers a solution to combat the sleeplessness that results from worry and fear, you need only to "count your blessings, instead of sheep."
The Bible I believe would help us understand that perhaps Bing's smoothly sung lyrics aren't too far off. In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus instructs those He is teaching to "consider the birds of the air...and...the lilies of the field." If the Lord provides for them so abundantly, how much more will He provide for you!
So, when you're feeling discouraged, count your blessings - and the blessings of those around you - and remember that the Lord will provide all that we need to fulfill His will. Remembering these things is a sure way to help you rest easy.
Final Thought
It may not be the Christmas season however, we can spread a bit of Hope and Cheer to those around us.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the many blessings You have already bestowed upon me and my family. Despite hard times and worries, help me to count my blessings and not doubt Your love. Instead of worrying, remind me to give thanks, for You truly are good. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen.
